The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has announced the winners of its 2024-2025 Signs and Lines Program, which is part of the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) initiative. This program offers design services and up to $10,000 in construction funding for low-cost infrastructure projects around public schools. The aim is to improve safety and accessibility on key walking and biking routes through signage and pavement markings.

"The projects funded by our Signs and Lines Program aim to remove small obstacles that can hinder students from walking, biking, and rolling to school," said Transportation Secretary and CEO Monica Tibbits-Nutt. "We congratulate the winning schools this year and commend them for their dedication to the safety and wellbeing of their students."

The application period for this round opened on September 4, 2024, with a deadline of October 4, 2024. Eligible applicants were SRTS partner schools that had been partners for at least six months as of September 4, 2024. The selected projects are expected to be completed by June 30, 2025.

This year's recipients include Thoreau Elementary School in Concord, Gates Middle School in Scituate, and City View Discovery School in Worcester. This marks the sixth round of grants issued under the program since its pilot project in Lawrence during the 2018-2019 school year.

Massachusetts' SRTS Program is sponsored by MassDOT with funds from the Federal Highway Administration. It promotes safer routes for students by fostering partnerships between community organizations, local law enforcement, education leaders, and public health departments. Currently serving over 1,200 schools across more than 280 communities in Massachusetts, the program emphasizes pedestrian and bicycle safety.
