The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has voiced concerns over the reintroduction of the Municipal Empowerment Act by Governor Maura Healey. NFIB State Director Christopher Carlozzi issued a statement criticizing the legislation, which he believes could negatively impact local businesses.

Carlozzi stated, "Like most sequels, the return of the Municipal Empowerment Act is worse than the original. Allowing Massachusetts municipal governments to further increase local option taxes would be a step backwards in making the Commonwealth more competitive and affordable." He emphasized that industries such as restaurants and travel, already challenged by pandemic-related issues, inflation, and labor shortages, could suffer from increased taxes that may deter consumers.

He also expressed concern about a proposed new annual tax on vehicles. According to Carlozzi, this would not only affect small businesses like pizzerias and florists but also impact workers who need to be physically present at their jobs without the possibility of remote work.

The NFIB has been an advocate for small business owners across America for over 80 years. As a nonprofit and nonpartisan organization founded in 1943, it remains committed to supporting independent businesses nationwide.
