Washington – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, today applauded the introduction of a U.S. Senate resolution that would enable Senate staff to form legally-protected unions. In March, Senator Markey’s office became the first U.S. Senate office to voluntarily recognize staff efforts to form a union. Senator Markey’s 2020 re-election campaign was the first U.S. Senate campaign to unionize.
“Unionizing is a fundamental, critical exercise in democracy, and it is time the U.S. Senate allow its workers to legally form unions,” said Senator Markey. “I am proud to represent the first Senate office to voluntarily recognize these dedicated workers in their effort to unionize, and I look forward to more Senate offices joining this movement.”
