Massachusetts enrolled mainly white students in 2021-22 school year

In the 2021-22 school year, white students were the most represented ethnicity in Massachusetts schools, according to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

There were 507,721 white students enrolled, making up 55.7% of the student body in Massachusetts.

The proportion of white students enrolled in the state fell from the year before.

Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander students were the least represented ethnic group among Massachusetts students.

Suffolk County had the most even distribution of races within its student body among all counties in the state, represented by multiple ethnic groups, which included 47.7% Hispanic students, 27.3% African American students, 15.7% White students, 6.1% Asian students, 2.8% Multiracial or non-Hispanic students, 0.3% Native American students, and 0.1% Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander students.

The number of students attending the state’s schools in the 2021-22 school year grew to 911,529.

Students in Massachusetts are predominantly white, according to state data from 2020, with only 35% of the students considered people of color.

Across the state, Hispanic and Latino students saw the highest high school dropout rates.

Underrepresentation is found among educators in Massachusetts as well. The Rennie Center reported that only 9% of teachers are people of color.
