A West Wareham resident, Joshua Roe, was sentenced in federal court in Boston for receiving and possessing child sexual abuse material. U.S. District Court Judge Brian E. Murphy handed down a sentence of five years in prison followed by five years of supervised release. Roe, 38, pleaded guilty in January 2025 to one count each of receipt and possession of child pornography. He has been held in federal custody since his arrest in September 2024.

Law enforcement searched Roe’s home on September 6, 2024, and recovered about 11 electronic devices belonging to him. A forensic examination at the scene revealed images and videos containing child sexual abuse material. Later examinations found such material on seven devices, including deleted files.

United States Attorney Leah B. Foley; Michael Krol, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations; and Chief Walter Correia of the Wareham Police Department announced the sentencing. Assistant U.S. Attorney Suzanne Sullivan Jacobus from the Major Crimes Unit prosecuted the case.

“This case is brought as part of Project Safe Childhood. In 2006, the Department of Justice created Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative designed to protect children from exploitation and abuse. Led by the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the DOJ’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children, as well as identity and rescue victims,” according to officials.
