The UMass Lowell baseball team was eliminated from the America East Championship after losing to the Binghamton Bearcats and the UMBC Retrievers on May 21. The River Hawks, seeded fifth, fell 3-0 to Binghamton before being shut out by UMBC, 8-0.
These results end UMass Lowell’s season with a record of 21–31. Head Coach Nick Barese said, “It is always hard to end a season without a championship, but there’s no doubt about it, we took a step forward this year as a program. The guys who finished their careers as a River Hawk mean so much to this program and coaching staff. They left UML baseball better off than when they got here.”
In the first game against Binghamton, senior Jacob Jette pitched over five innings with seven strikeouts and three earned runs allowed. Graduate student Frankie DeMaro provided two scoreless innings in relief. Despite efforts at the plate by Sean O’Leary and Nicholas Solorzano, UMass Lowell could not overcome an early deficit created by Binghamton’s offense.
Against UMBC in the second game of the day, sophomore Nolan Geisler started on the mound for three innings with one strikeout while Jake LeFrancois added three more innings in relief. The Retrievers built an early lead and extended it with five runs in the fourth inning.
The River Hawks managed several hits throughout both games but were unable to score against strong pitching performances from their opponents. Defensive highlights included solid outings from freshmen Tyler Dunlea and Josh Doney late in relief.
Looking ahead, Barese acknowledged that although this season ended without a title win, he believes progress has been made within the program.
