Governor Maura Healey has criticized the Trump Administration’s decision to cancel nearly $32 million in federal funding for Massachusetts. The funds, awarded last year to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), were intended for purchasing construction materials like asphalt, glass, steel, and concrete for transportation projects. This program aimed to create manufacturing jobs and enhance U.S. leadership in clean manufacturing.
“President Trump says he wants to bring back manufacturing jobs to the U.S., but he’s cancelling millions of dollars in funding that would’ve created manufacturing jobs and boosted American leadership in this industry,” Governor Healey said. She added that this decision hampers states’ ability to procure necessary materials for infrastructure improvements, affecting roads and bridges nationwide.
Transportation Secretary & CEO Monica Tibbits-Nutt expressed concern over the impact on local communities. “The loss of these federal construction funds presents real challenges for communities that have long awaited safer roads, better transit, and stronger connections to opportunity,” she said. Despite the setback, Tibbits-Nutt emphasized their commitment to collaborating with federal partners to secure resources for critical projects.
The U.S. Department of Transportation informed MassDOT last week about the rescission of the Low-Carbon Transportation Materials Program under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. This act was recently passed by Congressional Republicans and signed by President Donald Trump. In November 2024, a total of $1.2 billion was awarded through this program to 39 state transportation departments, including $31,933,577 allocated for MassDOT.
