A Salvadoran national living in Chelsea, Massachusetts, pleaded guilty in federal court to illegally reentering the United States after previously being deported.

Juan Carlos Gil-Ochoa, 36, admitted to one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien before U.S. District Court Judge Angel Kelley. Sentencing is set for October 3, 2025. Gil-Ochoa was indicted by a federal grand jury in June 2025 and arrested by immigration authorities on May 12, 2025.

Gil-Ochoa had been deported to El Salvador in April 2013. Authorities later encountered him again in the United States in October 2023.

The charge carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison, up to one year of supervised release, and a fine that can reach $250,000. After serving any imposed sentence, Gil-Ochoa faces removal from the country once more. Sentences are determined by federal judges based on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and relevant statutes.

“United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Acting Field Office Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston made the announcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Suzanne Sullivan Jacobus of the Major Crimes Unit is prosecuting the case.”
