Enjoy a summer day with Ride to Work Day, scheduled for June 10th. This annual event promotes the use of motorcycles and scooters for daily transportation. Safety is emphasized, as MassDOT reminds riders of their responsibility to follow road rules and wear safety gear.

MassDOT offers the Massachusetts Rider Education Program (MREP) through the Registry of Motor Vehicles, providing training for both novice and experienced riders. More information is available on their website.

Motorcycle and scooter fatalities are higher than those involving passenger cars. Riders are urged to adhere to speed limits, traffic rules, and avoid driving under the influence. Helmets are crucial for safety; wearing one that meets U.S. Department of Transportation standards can significantly improve survival chances in crashes.

Motorists should remain vigilant for motorcyclists due to their smaller size and reduced visibility. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states: “Motorcyclists know that the freedom and exhilaration of riding is like nothing else. NHTSA wants you to be able to enjoy a full lifetime of that joy because you’ve chosen to ride safely—while wearing a helmet and while sober.”

The MAPFRE Insurance-sponsored MassDOT Highway Assistance Program supports all motorists, including motorcyclists, on highways around Metro Boston, Worcester, Springfield, and Cape Cod. The program operates Monday through Friday during peak hours with extended routes during holidays. Assistance on I-90 and in Boston’s tunnel system is available 24/7.
