Demand Sage released a comprehensive report on Apr. 18 highlighting the latest statistics and trends in link building for 2026. The report details how strategies have shifted in response to changes in search engine algorithms, with digital PR and AI-powered tools now playing significant roles.

The findings are important for marketers and businesses aiming to improve their website rankings, as they show which tactics are most effective in today’s digital landscape. According to the report, Google continues to use over 200 ranking factors, but links remain one of the most influential elements.

The data shows that a large majority of online content struggles to gain backlinks: “A staggering 94% of online content fails to secure any external links, with only 2.2% successfully acquiring them.” Additionally, “95% of all pages on the internet have zero backlinks,” underscoring ongoing challenges for site owners seeking visibility.

Digital PR has become increasingly popular among marketers, with “67.3% of marketers” using it as their main method for link building. AI is also transforming the field: “86% of marketing professionals use AI SEO tools, and backlink automation is one of their top three AI tool choices.” The report notes that experienced practitioners outperform beginners by generating more than three times as many backlinks each month.

Link-building efforts typically take time before results appear. Most survey participants observed an impact within one to six months after securing new backlinks. Budgets continue to rise as well; many businesses allocate between $1,000 and $5,000 monthly toward these activities.

The study highlights several case studies demonstrating successful campaigns such as Backlinko’s Skyscraper Technique and Ahrefs’ use of a dedicated ‘Stats’ page strategy—both focused on creating superior content or resources that attract high-quality editorial links from reputable websites.

Looking ahead, Demand Sage’s analysis suggests that being cited in AI-generated summaries may soon be more valuable than achieving traditional top search rankings alone.
