On October 22, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) Massachusetts State Director Christopher Carlozzi led a virtual event to address ongoing concerns about the state’s unemployment insurance (UI) system. The session provided information for small business owners on the current UI situation and discussed ways to advocate for changes.
According to NFIB, employers in Massachusetts are facing nearly $5 billion in UI debt due to layoffs related to the pandemic and a significant state accounting mistake. The organization highlighted that Massachusetts has one of the least favorable UI systems nationally, citing its eligibility rules, lengthy benefit duration, and high weekly maximum benefit. Projections indicate that by the fourth quarter of 2027, the state’s UI Trust Fund could become insolvent, which may result in further tax increases for employers.
The event covered several key questions: “What is the UI disaster?”, “What is NFIB doing about it?”, and “What can employers like you do to be a part of the solution?”
Carlozzi stated during the briefing that it was important for business owners to understand these challenges and participate in advocacy efforts.
For those who missed the live session, NFIB has made a recording available online. Individuals seeking more information were encouraged to contact NFIB Grassroots Manager Julianna Rauf at julianna.rauf@nfib.org.
