Mount Wachusett Community College announces student speakers for 61st commencement ceremony

Mount Wachusett Community College announced on May 8 the selection of three student speakers for its upcoming 61st Commencement Ceremony. The students, each representing one of the college’s academic schools, were chosen based on their academic achievement, leadership, perseverance, and commitment to their communities.

Leila Marie of Fitchburg will represent the School of Nursing and Health Sciences. She is earning her Associate of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies, Allied Health with high honors. Marie serves as President of the Commonwealth Honors Program and is a Commonwealth Honors Scholar. As a first-generation Kenyan student, she has demonstrated resilience and self-advocacy throughout her studies while developing a clear purpose in healthcare. In addition to her academic work, Marie has experience as a behavior technician and Certified Nursing Assistant and works as a lifeguard at the Mount Fitness Pool. She volunteers at Monty’s Market Food Pantry and Heywood Hospital and enjoys playing violin and bass guitar. She plans to continue at MWCC for an Associate Degree in Nursing with the goal of becoming a registered nurse.

Gabriella “Gabby” Riendeau from Hudson, New Hampshire will speak for the School of Business, Science, Technology and Mathematics. Riendeau is earning her Associate of Science in Environmental Conservation with highest honors and received the Environmental Conservation Curriculum Award. Described as thoughtful and resilient, she is recognized for her passion for community involvement and lifelong learning.

Melissa Gates from Fitchburg will represent the School of Liberal Arts, Social Sciences, and Education. Gates is earning her Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts & Sciences Degree with highest honors at age 43 as a first-generation college student returning through the Mass Reconnect program after years away from education.

“These students exemplify the perseverance, leadership, and transformative power of education that define the Mount Wachusett Community College experience,” said MWCC President James Vander Hooven. “Their stories inspire not only their fellow graduates but our entire college community.”

The ceremony will celebrate graduates across all programs within Mount Wachusett Community College.
