A Mexican national living in New Bedford was sentenced in federal court in Boston for illegally reentering the United States after being deported. Bernardo Lorenzo-Guatemala, 38, received a four-month prison sentence and two years of supervised release from U.S. District Court Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton. After serving his sentence, he will be subject to deportation.

Lorenzo-Guatemala pleaded guilty in June 2025 to one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien. He had been arrested and charged by criminal complaint in May 2025.

Authorities said Lorenzo-Guatemala was previously deported on June 4, 2019. He returned to the United States without authorization at an unspecified time after that date. Immigration officials learned of his presence following his arrest on July 2, 2024, for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.

“United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Acting Field Office Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston made the announcement. Valuable assistance was provided by the Lynn Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Sullivan of the Criminal Division prosecuted the case.”
