First-year Dylan McElhinney advanced to the quarterfinal round of the women’s 1500m at the 2026 NCAA East First Round in Lexington, Ky., on May 28. Competing in her first NCAA postseason race, McElhinney recorded a personal-best time of 4:10.98, finishing fifth in her heat and securing an automatic qualification for Saturday’s quarterfinal. Her performance ranked seventh overall among all competitors in the event’s first round.

McElhinney, who is from New York and was named to the All-Ivy League Second Team this season, ran a final lap split of 1:05.28 to break away with the lead pack. Her time is now the third fastest in school history for the women’s 1500m and makes her one of only three Harvard student-athletes ever to run under 4:11 in this event, joining Maia Ramsden and Abbe Goldstein.

The day also featured notable performances from other Harvard athletes. Sophomore Abigail Dennis set a new school record in the women’s 100 hurdles with a time of 13.32 seconds, surpassing her previous record set earlier this month at the Ivy League Heptagonal Outdoor Championships; she finished 28th overall. Dennis also competed in the women’s 400 hurdles first round, placing 46th with a time of 1:02.65.

In field events, sophomore Tyler Glover reached a distance of 16.34 meters on her final throw to finish twentieth in shot put during her NCAA East First Round debut; it marked her third time surpassing sixteen meters this outdoor season. Junior Marta Amani took twenty-fourth place in long jump with a mark of six meters on her second attempt—her fourth leap over that distance this year—while sophomore Ella McRitchie cleared 4.22 meters for twentieth place in pole vault after setting Harvard’s school record earlier this season.

Sophomore Ella Cooper competed as well, running both sprints; she finished twenty-ninth in the women’s 100 meters (11.42) and twenty-fifth in the 200 meters (23.24). Cooper was recently named Most Outstanding Female Track Athlete at the Ivy League Outdoor Championships.

Competition continues tomorrow for Harvard athletes at day three of the NCAA East First Round.
