The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) marked two significant milestones in Western Massachusetts, focusing on safety and infrastructure improvements. Interim Secretary Phillip Eng and Undersecretary Jonathan Gulliver participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new roundabout in Pittsfield and a groundbreaking event for a bridge preservation project in Cummington.
The Pittsfield roundabout, located at North Street and First Street, features enhancements at three intersections, including Route 7 with Tyler Street, Charles Street, and Springfield Avenue. The project also incorporates bicycle lanes, sidewalks, and shared-use paths to improve pedestrian and cyclist facilities.
“Investments in transportation is investment in our communities, economy and the public we serve,” said Interim MassDOT Secretary Phillip Eng. He emphasized the commitment to enhancing safety across the state under the Healey-Driscoll Administration.
In Cummington, construction began on the bridge over the Westfield River. This project involves replacing the concrete deck, steel safety curbs, installing wheel guards, and reconstructing approach roadways. Additional work includes repainting and guardrail installation. Completion is expected by 2028.
Undersecretary Jonathan Gulliver highlighted these projects as part of MassDOT’s $2 billion capital program aimed at strengthening transportation networks across Massachusetts.
Mayor Peter Marchetti of Pittsfield expressed gratitude for the partnership with state agencies to enhance local safety and infrastructure.
