Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has announced the recipients of its 2025-2026 Safe Routes to School Bike Rack Grant. The initiative aims to encourage students to walk, bike, or roll to school by providing necessary infrastructure such as new or additional bike racks. Schools lacking these facilities, or those needing replacements for old ones, were eligible to apply during the application period from October 31 to November 14, 2025.
This year, over 60 applications were received. The selected schools are Grafton Street School in Worcester, Greenhalge Elementary School in Lowell, Linden STEAM Academy in Malden, Memorial Elementary School in Hopedale, Mulready Elementary School in Hudson, and Sunderland Elementary School in Sunderland.
Phil Eng, Interim MassDOT Secretary & MBTA General Manager said: “The Massachusetts Safe Routes to School Bike Rack Grant Program allows students the opportunity to choose active, healthy, and sustainable ways to get to school. By investing in safe, secure bike parking, MassDOT is helping schools across the Commonwealth support walking, biking, and rolling.” He emphasized the administration’s commitment to improving transportation safety and accessibility.
This marks the second round of awards following successful pilot projects in Medford and Brockton during the 2023-2024 school year. Schools can customize their bike racks with options for color and installation method. The Massachusetts SRTS Program is sponsored by MassDOT and funded by the Federal Highway Administration. It serves nearly 1,300 schools across more than 285 communities statewide.
