The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) announced on May 15 that it has fined NorthStar Demolition and Remediation, Inc., also known as Northeast Remediation, $17,400 for asbestos violations during abatement work at the Northfield Mountain energy storage facility at 99 Millers Falls Road in Northfield.
The penalty follows inspections by MassDEP in November 2025, which found that Northeast Remediation did not follow required asbestos work practices. Inspectors determined that workers failed to properly wet asbestos insulation before removal and did not adequately containerize or seal the material. These lapses created a risk of exposure to hazardous materials.
“Compliance with the asbestos regulations minimizes risk and helps to ensure the safety of both workers and the public,” said Michael Gorski, director of MassDEP’s Western Regional Office in Springfield. “Northeast Remediation is being held accountable for failing to comply with the most basic work practices.”
Under MassDEP’s order, Northeast Remediation must pay the full fine. The company has since addressed and resolved all identified violations related to its abatement activities.
The MassDEP Central Regional Office operates as a division of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and provides regulatory oversight, compliance assistance, visitor parking outside its main entrance, serves 77 towns and cities with about 900,000 residents across Worcester County and parts of Middlesex and Norfolk counties, advances public access to environmental information, oversees major river basins, and safeguards key watersheds according to the official website.
Property owners or contractors who have questions about handling asbestos-containing materials or complying with state regulations are encouraged by MassDEP to contact their regional office for further assistance.
