The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has revealed the winners of its 2025 “Name A Snowplow” contest. This annual event invites elementary and middle school students from across Massachusetts to propose names for the state’s snowplows, which will be operational during the 2025/2026 winter season. The initiative aims to celebrate the winter season and acknowledge the dedication of public works employees and contractors.
Interim MassDOT Secretary and MBTA General Manager and CEO Phil Eng expressed gratitude towards participating students, stating, “Thank you to all of the students who participated. Your creativity allows us to highlight to all, the importance of the work performed by our workforce.” He emphasized the pride taken by crews in maintaining road safety during adverse weather conditions.
Undersecretary and State Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver highlighted the educational aspect of the contest: “MassDOT’s annual Name a Snowplow contest is a fun tradition that gets Massachusetts schools involved in winter safety.” He noted that it provides students with an opportunity to learn about road maintenance while being creative.
The contest received entries from public school classrooms statewide, with a selection panel of MassDOT employees choosing winners from two grade-level categories: kindergarten through fourth grade, and fifth through eighth grade. Each winning classroom represents one of MassDOT’s six Highway Division districts.
Winning submissions include creative names such as “Master Snowda” from Colrain Central School and “The Blizzard Boss” from Lanesborough Elementary School. The full list of winners can be found on MassDOT’s Name A Snowplow 2025–26 Contest webpage.
