The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) is reminding residents about the upcoming changes in airport security identification requirements. Starting February 1, 2026, travelers without a federally approved ID, such as a REAL ID or U.S. passport, will need to enroll in the TSA’s Confirm ID program. This program involves identity verification at the airport and costs $45 for ten days of travel.
Currently, over 65% of Massachusetts residents have adopted REAL ID, with more than 3.67 million holding one. Registrar of Motor Vehicles Colleen Ogilvie said, “We want everyone to be able to get through airport security as quickly and smoothly as possible.” She encouraged residents to ensure they have a REAL ID for future travel plans.
Residents can apply for a REAL ID through an in-person appointment at the RMV’s Online Service Center or at Northeast AAA locations for members. The required documents include proof of lawful presence, two proofs of Massachusetts residency, and proof of a full Social Security Number. Name change documentation is also necessary if applicable.
REAL ID fees are consistent with standard credentials: $50 for driver’s license renewal and $25 for Mass ID renewal or upgrade before expiration. Renewal can occur up to one year before expiration.
