The University of Massachusetts men’s lacrosse team won a close match against Hobart on April 18, securing a 13-12 victory in double overtime. Freshman attack Thomas Bagnall scored the decisive goal with just 45 seconds left in the second overtime period, bringing UMass to a season record of 10-4 overall and an even 3-3 in Atlantic 10 play. Hobart’s loss leaves them at 2-10 overall and winless in conference play.
This result marks the first time since 2019 that Massachusetts has reached double-digit wins. It was also their first multi-overtime contest since defeating Drexel in triple overtime during the 2011 season.
Bagnall led the Gorillas’ offense with his first career five-goal performance, also collecting three ground balls and causing one turnover. Redshirt sophomore Dylan Johnson contributed four goals and assisted on Bagnall’s game-winning score, finishing with five points for the day. Junior Charles Kurtz added three assists, while freshman Colin Coyle scored twice and junior Zack Waxman recorded both a goal and an assist. Senior Zach Auble had three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
For Hobart, David Peterkin finished with two goals and three assists for five points, while Rufus Robertson added two goals and one assist.
Hobart started strong by scoring eight of the game’s first nine goals before UMass responded with several runs to narrow the deficit throughout regulation. The teams were tied at twelve after four quarters as well as through one overtime period. In double overtime, Johnson found Bagnall near goal for the winning shot following a key defensive stop by UMass.
Hobart outshot Massachusetts by just one (49 to 48) and collected more ground balls (37 to UMass’ 32). The Statesmen converted two out of three man-up opportunities; UMass did not score on any of its extra-man chances. Sophomore Owen Salanger made nineteen saves for Massachusetts in net; Elhanan Wilson stopped fifteen shots for Hobart.
UMass will conclude its regular season next Friday against No. 20 Penn at Farmingdale High School.
