The Massachusetts Department of Transportation Aeronautics Division (MassDOT Aeronautics) has announced an $8.4 million investment in runway infrastructure at public-use airports across the state. This initiative, which is already underway, will span five construction seasons and conclude by the spring of Fiscal Year 2027. The maintenance work will pause during the winter months.

Transportation Secretary and CEO Monica Tibbits-Nutt emphasized the importance of regional airports, stating, “Our regional airports are vital economic engines that connect communities, support local businesses, and strengthen our statewide transportation network.” She added that timely preventative maintenance is crucial for ensuring these hubs remain safe and efficient for business, travel, and emergency response.

Denise Garcia, MassDOT Aeronautics Acting Administrator, highlighted that pavement management represents the division’s largest capital investment. “This capital investment will extend the runway pavement’s useful service and enhance safety for the flying public,” she said.

The maintenance program includes various activities such as runway sealing, repair of airport pavement, surface treatments, cold in-place recycling, full-depth reclamation, and pavement removal. It also covers renewing airport markings and erosion control measures for both turf and paved runways.

The contract applies to all airports under MassDOT’s oversight—34 out of 37 public-use airports in Massachusetts—excluding Logan International Airport, Hanscom Field, and Worcester Regional Airport which are managed by Massport. This allows these airports to address infrastructure needs effectively.

MassDOT Aeronautics will provide a construction safety and phasing plan for each airport involved in the project. This plan will detail the work to be performed along with construction safety requirements.
