The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has opened applications for its 12th annual Safe Streets Smart Trips high school video contest. The competition aims to engage students in promoting roadway safety and reducing pedestrian and bicyclist injuries and fatalities.

Students are invited to create a 30-60 second video focusing on “Safe Walking, Biking, and Driving Behaviors.” MassDOT’s Transportation Secretary and CEO Monica Tibbits-Nutt expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “By engaging students directly in roadway safety, we not only raise awareness but also empower the next generation to lead the way in creating safer streets for everyone.”

The contest is part of the Massachusetts Strategic Highway Safety Plan and is open to all public high school students in the state. It includes categories for Freshmen/Sophomores and Juniors/Seniors. A panel from MassDOT will select grand prize, runner-up, and honorable mention videos in each category. Winning entries will be showcased at MassDOT’s annual active transportation conference, Moving Together, on October 28. Prizes include $600 Amazon gift cards for grand prize winners and $300 gift cards for runners-up.
