In preparation for an expected winter storm, the Healey-Driscoll Administration is advising Massachusetts residents to prepare for extreme cold and significant snowfall. The National Weather Service has issued warnings for both extreme cold and a winter storm, predicting wind chills as low as 25 degrees below zero in western Massachusetts from Friday evening through Saturday afternoon. A Cold Weather Advisory is also in place for the rest of the state during this period. Snowfall is anticipated to begin Sunday morning, with accumulations potentially reaching up to two feet in some areas by Monday evening.
Governor Maura Healey has instructed non-emergency Executive Department state employees not to report to work on Monday, January 26, and encourages employers to consider remote work options. “This weekend, we will be reminded of the extremes that winter weather can pose for us here in Massachusetts,” said Governor Healey. Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll advised drivers to exercise caution if traveling during the storm, especially around the time of the Patriots game on Sunday.
The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) will activate its State Emergency Operations Center along with regional centers in Agawam, Tewksbury, and Franklin. MEMA Director Dawn Brantley emphasized the importance of staying informed about conditions and taking necessary precautions.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is preparing roadways ahead of the storm with over 3,000 pieces of equipment ready for deployment. Interim MassDOT Transportation Secretary Phil Eng urged travelers to plan ahead and limit travel if possible. Public transit riders are encouraged to check for service updates via MBTA’s communication channels.
Boston Logan International Airport plans to remain operational throughout the weekend despite potential flight cancellations due to weather conditions. Passengers are advised to check with airlines regarding rescheduling options.
The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) will close all agency-managed recreation facilities on Sunday and Monday as part of their snow removal operations. The DCR also plans parking bans consistent with local municipal bans during active snow emergencies.
Residents are encouraged to follow safety tips such as clearing snow from vehicles before driving, charging electronic devices fully before potential power outages, and ensuring smoke alarms have fresh batteries. More information can be found at Mass.gov/Snow.
