A Mansfield resident, Michael Kennedy, 48, was arrested for allegedly possessing ammunition as a convicted felon. The arrest took place while Kennedy was on supervised release for a 2021 conviction related to possession of ammunition by a felon.

Court documents state that Kennedy had been ordering firearm parts online to his home. These parts were reportedly used to assemble or manufacture M-16 and AR-15 style rifles. During a search of his residence in Mansfield, authorities say they found several privately made firearm frames, a 3D printer, and various calibers of ammunition. A loaded 5.7 pistol was allegedly discovered in the arm of a reclining chair where Kennedy had been sleeping, containing 22 rounds including one in the chamber. The recovered ammunition included CBC 9mm, JAG 9mm, and FN 5.7 x 28mm rounds.

Kennedy is barred from owning ammunition due to previous convictions in the District of Massachusetts for bank robbery and being a felon in possession of ammunition, as well as convictions in Norfolk Superior Court for armed robbery and witness intimidation.

The charge carries a potential sentence of up to 15 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine that could reach $250,000. Sentencing decisions are made by federal district court judges following U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and applicable statutes.

United States Attorney Leah B. Foley stated: “The details contained in the charging document are allegations. The defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in the court of law.” Thomas Greco, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives joined Foley in announcing the arrest. Support was provided by the Mansfield Police Department and the United States Postal Inspection Service. Assistant United States Attorney Allegra Flamm from the Major Crimes Unit is leading the prosecution.
