Senior captain Liam Lyons of the Holy Cross men’s track and field team competed in the East First Round of the NCAA Championship hosted by the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky., on May 27. Lyons ran in the 1500m event and placed 21st with a time of 3:44.85.
Lyons is the first Crusader to represent Holy Cross men’s track and field at the NCAA East First Round in back-to-back seasons since Nathaniel Couture, who competed in javelin during 2006 and 2007. He is also one of just three student-athletes from the program to qualify for this stage since the turn of the century, along with Gabe Piepergerdes (400m hurdles) and Couture (javelin).
In his previous appearance, Lyons finished 42nd in the same event at the 2024 NCAA East First Round held in Jacksonville, Florida, posting a time of 3:46.63.
Lyons concludes his collegiate career as a record holder for Holy Cross with school records in four events: the 1,000m, 1,500m, mile, and 3,000m. For this season he earned a top-15 finish at the Patriot League Cross Country Championships in fall 2023; two medals at this year’s Patriot League Indoor Championships; and won gold in the Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Championships’ 1500m event.
