The Holy Cross women’s track and field team completed the first day of the Patriot League Championships on May 15 at the United States Naval Academy, finishing the day in sixth place with a total of 11 points.
The event is significant for Holy Cross as it marks strong performances by several athletes, especially senior Celia Kulis. Kulis qualified for the finals in the 100-meter hurdles after placing first in preliminaries with a time of 13.47 seconds. This performance broke both the program record for Holy Cross and the facility record at Navy’s Ingram Field.
Kulis also leads going into Saturday’s events in the women’s heptathlon, having accumulated 3,302 points. She placed first in both the 100-meter hurdles (13.66 seconds) and shot put (12.59 meters), second in the 200 meters (25.14 seconds), and fifth in high jump (1.66 meters).
Other highlights from Friday include junior Shannon Briseno achieving fifth place in pole vault with a personal best height of 3.88 meters, senior Ester Mokonchu finishing seventh in hammer throw with a new personal best of 50.43 meters, sophomore Aluna Coogan-Coyne qualifying for the final round of the 1,500-meter race after placing seventh with a time of 4:29.76, senior Giavanna Ciaravino advancing to finals in the 100-meter dash by finishing fifth at 11.92 seconds, and junior Grace Ryan securing fourth place in javelin with her top mark reaching 42.78 meters.
The Crusaders are set to conclude their participation at this year’s Patriot League Championships on Saturday, May 16.
