The Holy Cross softball team split its doubleheader against Lafayette on Apr. 18 at Freshman Field, dropping the first game 5-3 before coming back to win the second game 4-2.

This result leaves Holy Cross with a conference record of 4-7, tied with Lafayette and Bucknell for the final spot in the Patriot League Tournament. The deciding game of the series is scheduled for Sunday, Apr. 19 at 10:30 a.m.

In game two, Holy Cross overcame a two-run deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning by scoring four runs. Sophomore Kate Trudgen delivered a go-ahead two-run single to left field after her team tied it up at two runs each. Freshman pitcher Bridget Mulkeen pitched her first career complete game, allowing six hits and striking out four batters over seven innings while stranding six baserunners.

Prior to the start of game one, Holy Cross honored Genoa Grosch Dickson ’99 by retiring her No. 11 jersey—the first such honor in program history—and having her throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Grosch Dickson holds several single-season and career records for strikeouts, wins, earned run average (ERA), starts, complete games, and shutouts.

In game one action, freshman Bella Nugent hit a two-run home run in the second inning to give Holy Cross an early lead before Lafayette rallied late with home runs from Regan Dillon and Katie Harrington to secure their victory.

Looking ahead, both teams will return for Sunday’s series finale that could determine postseason positioning within their conference.
