Harvard men’s heavyweight rowing lost to Princeton in the Compton Cup on April 18, with the Tigers taking the varsity eight event. The visiting Princeton team finished first in the main race with a time of 5:29.995, while Harvard came in just behind at 5:31.294 after a late push.
The result is significant as it marks another close contest between two of the top-ranked collegiate rowing programs. Although Harvard was defeated in the varsity eight, they continue to lead the all-time series against Princeton by a wide margin.
Princeton opened the day by winning the fourth varsity event, but Harvard responded with victories in both third and second varsity eights. Marco Vicino led Harvard’s third varsity boat to a win at 5:34.823, and Tyler Horler stroked the second varsity crew to finish at 5:32.876—both races ending nearly four seconds ahead of their Princeton counterparts.
Princeton has now won three of the last four Compton Cups, though Harvard maintains a strong historical record with a total advantage of 72-25 over its rival.
Next up for Harvard is competition for the Adams Cup against Penn and Navy on Saturday, April 25 on Philadelphia’s Schuykill River.
