A former United States Postal Service employee was sentenced on April 1 in federal court in Boston for stealing mail and government funds.
Michael Murray, age 38, of Lynn, received a sentence of 30 months’ probation from U.S. District Court Judge Leo T. Sorokin. Murray was also ordered to pay $8,553 in restitution and forfeit $5,130. He pleaded guilty in January to one count each of theft of mail matter by an employee and theft of government money after being indicted by a federal grand jury in April last year.
According to the announcement from United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Matthew Modafferi, Special Agent in Charge at the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General Northeast Area Office, Murray worked as a postal clerk at both the Beach Street Post Office in Revere and the Melrose Post Office between September 2022 and July 2023. During part of that time—from April through July—he used his position to steal contents from hundreds of pieces of mail entrusted to him, including gift cards, cash, and checks worth about $3,422.
Murray also stole USPS money orders during this period by generating them for customers but using them himself; these totaled approximately $5,131.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Dustin Chao prosecuted the case.
