The Election Modernization Coalition (EMC) has long worked to eliminate barriers to voting and update the registration and ballot-casting process. In the recent Presidential primary, voter turnout was notably high despite limited competition within either major party.
Massachusetts Secretary of State Galvin reported that over 1.2 million voters participated in this primary, marking the first since the introduction of a no-excuse vote by mail program in the state. Of these votes, 51.8% were cast on Election Day, while nearly all remaining voters chose mail ballots, with similar participation from both parties.
Galvin highlighted that Republican primary turnout was the second highest in Massachusetts history, only exceeded by 2016 figures. Meanwhile, Democratic turnout reached a record high for primaries involving an incumbent president.
The EMC expressed satisfaction with these outcomes. “We are truly gratified to see such wildly successful results of a vote-by-mail program in the Commonwealth,” said their statement. “We’re grateful to the city election officials and town clerks, to the poll workers, and to every voter who made their voice heard in this election.”
