An East Weymouth resident has admitted in federal court to obtaining Social Security benefits through fraudulent means. Debora A. Siler, 68, pleaded guilty to one count of bank fraud before U.S. District Court Judge Leo T. Sorokin, who set sentencing for December 15, 2025.

According to court documents, Siler accessed the checkbook and debit card belonging to a Social Security beneficiary who died in May 2015. From June 2015 through September 2020, she did not report the death to the Social Security Administration or the relevant bank and continued accessing funds by forging checks and using the debit card linked to the deceased’s account. The total amount fraudulently obtained was approximately $61,685.13.

Bank fraud carries a maximum sentence of up to 30 years in prison, five years of supervised release, and a fine that could reach $250,000 or twice the gross gain or loss involved in the offense. Sentencing will be determined by a federal district court judge according to U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and statutory considerations.

“United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Amy Connelly, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Social Security Administration, Office of the Inspector General, Office of Investigations, Boston Field Division made the announcement. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney James J. Nagelberg of the Major Crimes Unit is prosecuting the case.”
