A Dorchester resident was arrested and charged for allegedly receiving child sexual abuse material, according to a May 29 announcement by federal authorities.

Javier Alberto Baez Infante, 31, faces one count of receipt of child pornography. He was taken into custody at his home on May 27 and, after an initial court appearance, was ordered detained pending a hearing scheduled for June 5 in federal court in Worcester.

According to the criminal complaint, Infante was identified as a participant in an online private chat group focused on viewing and exchanging child sexual abuse material. Authorities allege that during a search of Infante’s residence on May 27, approximately 30 videos depicting such material were found in various download folders on his phone. The videos reportedly depicted the abuse of minor victims as young as two to four years old.

The charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and up to twenty years in prison, at least five years and up to lifetime supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000. Sentencing is determined by a federal district court judge based on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and relevant statutes.

United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Jeff Grimming, Acting Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations in New England, announced the arrest. Assistant U.S. Attorney John Potapchuk from the Major Crimes Unit is prosecuting the case.

This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 aimed at combating child sexual exploitation and abuse nationwide through coordination among federal, state, and local agencies. The details contained in charging documents are allegations; Infante is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
