The Department of Public Works announced on April 17 that several road and sidewalk construction projects are underway across town, with work scheduled Monday through Friday from 6 am to 5 pm. All work is weather dependent, and severe weather may cause delays or new announcements.

These projects aim to improve local infrastructure and may impact traffic in various areas. The department provided specific details about each project so residents can plan accordingly.

On April 20-21, Snell Street will be closed between House #208 Snell St and Moody Field Road for roadway milling and repaving under the Norwottuck Rail Trail bridge crossing. Either side of the road will remain accessible via South Pleasant Street or Northampton Road. Public Works employees have chosen to work on the Monday holiday to minimize disruption of normal weekday traffic.

During the week of April 20, Palmer Paving and Fillion’s Landscaping will install roadway shoulder loam and plant grass seed along South East Street from Valley View Drive to Mill Lane. While South East Street will stay open, drivers should expect delays.

Work continues through at least early June on North Pleasant Street sidewalks between Hobart Lane and Fisher Street by Taylor Davis Construction. The street remains open but reduced to a single lane with alternating traffic due to sidewalk reconstruction activities.

Baltazar Construction is building a roundabout at University Drive and Amity Street, with completion expected in October. This intersection connects UMass Amherst, downtown, and future developments. Delays are anticipated as some streets are temporarily reduced to a single lane during construction activities. The project is funded primarily by nearly $2 million from the MassWorks Infrastructure Program grant awarded by the state.

Residents are reminded to follow directions given by detail officers or onsite engineers during construction operations, expect delays, seek alternate routes when possible, observe parking restrictions—vehicles parked on-street during operations will be towed—and drive slowly through all active zones.
