Boston College baseball lost to Liberty 4-3 in the opening game of the Athens Regional in the NCAA Tournament on May 29. The Eagles, seeded second, held a brief lead late in the game before Liberty scored two runs in the ninth inning to secure the win.
Pitcher A.J. Colarusso matched his season high by pitching seven innings and striking out six batters while allowing two runs. Julio Solier led Boston College offensively with two home runs, marking his first multi-home run game and tying him for second place for single-season hits at 82. Jack Toomey also contributed with a solo home run.
Liberty took an early lead by scoring twice in the first inning through RBI singles from Jaxon Sorenson and Nick Barone. Boston College narrowed the gap when Solier hit a home run in the fifth inning, followed by another homer from Solier in the seventh that tied the score at 2-2.
The Eagles moved ahead for the first time after Toomey’s solo shot to right field put them up 3-2 in the eighth inning. However, Liberty responded immediately with two runs at their next opportunity and maintained their advantage through to victory.
Boston College is scheduled to play again at noon on Saturday against either Georgia or LIU as part of game three of the Athens Regional. The broadcast network will be announced following completion of Friday’s remaining games.
