In the 2021-22 school year, 911,529 students enrolled in Massachusetts schools, slightly more than the previous year, according to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

The number of boys enrolled increased 0.1% whereas the number of girls enrolled dropped 0.2% across Massachusetts schools during the 2021-22 school year.

Across the state, the average school enrollment stood at 495, with the highest concentrations of students found in Middlesex County schools (210,167 students).

Students in Massachusetts are predominantly white, according to state data from 2020. 35% of students were considered people of color.

Across the state, Hispanic and Latino students suffered the highest high school dropout rates.

Underrepresentation is also found among educators in Massachusetts. The Rennie Center reported that only 9% of teachers are people of color.
